Wanganui Visitor Centre iSite |
|
The Visitor Information Centre is a place where visitors and Wanganui residents can gain information about events, exhibitions, places of interest and attractions offered by our region – as well as housing a range of other facilities.
31 Taupo Quay was identified as having one of the best locations on the riverfront. At the intersection of Taupo Quay and Drews Avenue, it overlooks the river and opens directly onto the new riverside walkway area. The building has been completely re-modelled, regenerating the existing warehouse. The building highlights Wanganui’s architectural heritage and creates a specifically Wanganui i-Site experience where the heavy timber columns, beams and beautiful complex timber rafters are contrasted with the new and modern facilities. The i-Site area will provide free internet access as well as free wireless access. In addition staff will be able to use ‘touch-screen’ technology to enhance their service. The i-Site acts as a booking agent for Intercity. Interislander and Bluebridge and staff can give advice and book accommodation both locally and across New Zealand. The Visitor Centre includes a Wanganui shop and a bush filled lightwell open to the sky is located in the heart of the building. A new staircase and glazed atrium has been created through the middle of the building linking upper and lower levels and highlighting the original building timber work. The Quay Gallery is located on the first floor offering a flexible exhibition space. The opening exhibition is ‘Wanganui Glass – a working process’ showcasing the development of glass art in New Zealand and specifically Wanganui. Pieces have been sourced from both the Sarjeant Gallery collection and private collections. The ‘Wanganui Experience’ is also located on the first floor of the building. It is a visual and sound experience depicting the city and the wider district, taking a journey from the river to the sea over the course of a day. Incorporating video footage and contemporary music, the four-minute film offers a taster of the natural and cultural heritage of the district. On the ground floor the information centre adjoins the new Zinc café which opens out onto a long cover terraced deck on the Drews Avenue side.
